First Impressions...

My first impressions…the “Opening Speech” video on the first class made me think of my own experience joining Facebook for the A13 group – very awkward, lots of discomfort, and a desire to leap into the screen and just be done with it. In essence, I felt like I was ‘fighting’ the technology as all I wanted was to be a part of the A13 information channel to keep up to date with my classmates and before I new it family members and old acquaintances were adding me as friends. (A little advice: Being on your 16-year-old niece’s Facebook is not in any way a good thing.) Ultimately it has worked out and I’ve made my peace with the what one friend calls, “OMG like the BEST thingy ever!”

  1. I have to say that I approached "the Book" with some trepidation as well. I do quite enjoy it now. The updates are unique, and it's been a great way to find friends from the past, relatives with whom I haven't talked in a long time, and just stay in touch with people from far away. I'm not into the games, but maybe that's for another time!

  3. OMG indeed: "facebook is the greatest invention ever"? What about actual books? What about actual faces for that matter! (Does commenting on my own blog count as commenting on a blog?)

  4. I just heard yesterday that the majority of Facebook "users" fit a particular middle-class,educated, mono-cultural demographic (this is looking at it in the millions). They were discussing the demise (?) of MySpace, or the flood of advertising dollars, specifically, from MySpace to Facebook. SO what is it really about? Advertising? Stuff we can mine for social data, which creates more advertising? Or social connections?

  5. I joined facebook with the same trepidation you did Kelly, and even after a year or so, the jury is still out. It's good for keeping in touch, and for being found by old classmates, but I'm extremely paranoid over the lack of privacy and control. To play or take part in many of the games, it's necessary to allow the creators of them access to my, and my friends' information. Pictures on facebook, belong to facebook. Here's an interesting link you might find interesting:
